Conveniently located just a few miles east of Austin, the lower Colorado River offers some of the best trophy bass fly fishing Texas has to offer. Target species are Largemouth and Guadalupe bass, but many other species including catfish, carp, sunfish and gar are caught frequently on flies. The best fishing conditions are late winter through early summer (Feb-June) and fall (late Sept-Nov). Warmer winter days are great too. This is truly a year-round fishery. When the Colorado fishes well, and it consistently does, fly fishers can have 20-40+ fish days with chances at monster largemouths (5-10lbs). Surface flies can be very productive and are the most exciting way to catch ‘em. With clear water you can watch bass materialize from the depths to attack topwater fly patterns. Low recreation traffic leave the river to just us most days. Fishing pressure is also low for its location, producing bass that routinely behave the way ambush predators are supposed to. Most of the floats we offer on the Colorado remain within an hour drive of Austin, but the river is fishable all the way to the Texas coast where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico via Matagorda Bay. Access points near Columbus are a great option for Houston residents. Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake) is also an option for some fishing in the Austin city limits. Call or email to ask about float trips on the Colorado.
